Born in England, 1874, into aristocratic family
Elected Conservative MP 1900 but moved to Liberals
Served as Liberal Minister 1906-1917 and 1920-1922
Rejoined the Conservatives. 1924-1929 – Chancellor of the Exchequer
As Chancellor of the Exchequer, he returned Britain’s economy to the Gold Standard which was a disaster. He lost his position and was seen as a failure in the 1930s.
Opposed to British policy of appeasement
When appeasement failed, Churchill’s reputation rose again
Was made First Lord of the Admiralty at start of WWII by Chamberlain (PM)
May 1940 – Chamberlain resigned. All parties agreed to back Churchill as PM of a coalition government
During Battle of Britain, he made important motivational speeches to the British people over BBC radio
Worked closely with Roosevelt (US President) during war
Totally anti-communist, but was willing to work with Stalin to defeat Hitler
Unexpectedly beaten by the Labour Party in the first post-war election
Became P again 1951-54. Died in 1965
